Short answer: May, June, September, early October
The Blue Cave looks the same colour all season — the light effect is consistent whenever the cave is open. But everything around it (sea conditions, crowds, prices, water temperature) varies by month.
Best combination of clear light, manageable crowds, comfortable sea and warm enough water: late May, June, and September. July and August are beautiful but significantly busier.
May & June — the sweet spot
May is arguably the single best month. Sea is settling into calm, water is warming (19-22°C), light in the cave is excellent, and the crowds are still manageable. Pre-peak prices.
June builds toward high season but is still quieter than July-August. Long days, reliably calm mornings, Pakleni and Hvar still pleasant before peak rush.
Particularly good for families with kids — calmer sea makes the Biševo crossing much more comfortable.
July & August — peak season
The cave is no less beautiful, but plan differently. Demand is at its highest, tours fill up faster, and there will be a queue at the cave entrance. Morning departures matter even more.
Water is warmest now (24-26°C). Hvar buzzes in the evenings. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for group tours and earlier for private charters.
Afternoon Maestral winds can build quickly — that is why we leave at 07:30 and aim to be on the way home before the afternoon chop.
September & October — underrated
September is one of the most pleasant months on the Adriatic. Sea is still warm from summer (24-26°C in early Sept, dropping to 22°C by end of month), crowds thin out visibly, and cave light remains excellent.
Early October stretches the season. Slightly cooler air but water is still swimmable. The Adriatic is often calmer in September than July, which means a smoother crossing.
If you have flexibility on dates and want a quieter, more relaxed version of the same experience, target September.
Winter & April — limited / closed
The cave is officially closed November through approximately late March. Rough sea conditions and reduced sunlight make the visit either dangerous or visually disappointing.
April is borderline — some days work, some don't. Fewer tours run. If you are visiting Split in April and want the Blue Cave, confirm with the operator that tours are running and accept that weather cancellations are more likely.
Day of week matters too
Weekdays are consistently less busy than weekends at every stop, including the Hvar harbour and the Blue Cave entrance. If your schedule allows, Tuesday-Thursday departures give you a noticeably calmer day than Saturday.
This effect is strongest in July-August. Shoulder season the difference is smaller but still real.
